Many Not Happy About Gambling Expansion

When video gambling came to town, some were very happy about the increased revenue that would be coming from these slot machine type games. The State Lottery Commission has proof that the video lottery terminals that they have now been using have led to an increase in revenues for the state. Over the course of a year, gross profits increased from $304 million to $354 million. Basically, that means that the slot machine owners walked away with $195 million after the state got theirs.

The new slot machine video terminals have brought in much needed money into the state to help education, senior citizens, advertising for tourism, as well as economic development. You would think that everyone would be happy about that, but some people are not.

The West Virginian’s Citizens Against Gambling Expansion (CAGE) wants to see the end of the new slot machine era. They think that all of the machines except for the ones used by fraternities or other non-profit clubs should be eliminated from the state. The state bought the licenses on the slot machines for ten years, and in another four those licenses run out. CAGE wants to see them gone. They think that there are roughly 6,600 permits that need to be let go, keeping just the 2,400 that are for charity. Some people say they would like to see the lottery terminals replaced with real slot machines at the horse tracks, but CAGE is against that as well, and is determined to fight it to the very end.
