Jamaica's Gaming IndustryAccording to the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission, the gaming lounge sector is the largest revenue generator in Jamaica. They have estimated their turnover around $18 to $20 billion a year. This is comparable to the compounded turnover of lotteries and betting – which are $14 and $5 billion respectively. Due to the large amount of revenue that they are bringing in, the commission has decided that it is necessary to add more rules and regulations to the industry. "Prior to November 2005, what we had were basically gaming machines in various locations and the commission up to then did not have responsibility or capability to determine the level of revenues," says a spokesperson for the committee. They are now adding payout rules and clearer classifications, to try and get a handle on some of the fraudulent activity that has been going on. The gaming lounges have previously been able to set the software in their own slot machines, and the commission thinks that is a bad idea. After a study of the slot machines, they discovered that it is best if they no longer have the right to handle that, and all slot machines will now come preprogrammed. The new regime has already made a difference, with roughly $48 million in taxes now coming into the government that previously were not. Back to September Index - Slot Machines Fan |
