After Katrina, Recovery Means InlandState lawmakers did not know what they were doing when they changed the rules concerning casinos. After Hurricane Katrina, state officials were shocked by the damage done to their casino industry and felt steps had to be taken. They passed an emergency measure to allow the casinos to be 800 feet from the shoreline – so that if another storm were to hit, the damage would be less severe. However, once that bill was signed, the casinos came pouring in. Since the storm, eight casinos have opened with seven of them in Biloxi. In a few weeks, there will be a ninth one opening in Gulport, and two more are under construction. There are more proposals submitted, and they await approval before they can break ground as well. The
casinos are important to the area; for all that slot machine
revenue goes into the state coffers and trickles down to help
the towns and cities. They are also bringing in tourists who
will spend money in these areas, and not just on the slot
machines. It means more jobs for residents, which is always a
good thing, since so many of them are out of work since Katrina
came in and destroyed the area.
