Korea’s Illegal Gambling Scandal GrowsLast week, officials told the former Vice Minister at the Culture Ministry that he could not leave the country. This in itself is telling, and it seems that the slot machine scandal continues to snowball. More and more officials are pulled into it every day, and now the slot machine businessmen are being targeted as well. Recently it was discovered that Kim Yong-Hwan, Chief Executive for Andamiro entertainment had roughly $3.1 million in funds that he kept in a secret bank account and used to influence government officials. Prosecutors are now investigating public officials and finding out if any of them received funds for business favors that they may have granted to slot machine proponents. Andamiro is important because it is one of the nineteen companies that were used by the government to issue the vouchers that are at the heart of this slot machine scandal. They were investigated last year when it was suspected they were bribing officials to get their license, but the charges were dropped citing lack of evidence. They currently have Kim Min-seok, the president of Korea Computer Game Industrial Association, under arrest for the bribing of public officials to help his association obtain a business license. Several chief executives have already been indicted due to the illegal programming of several slot machine games, and all of this is just the tip of the iceberg. The more officials search, the more dirt they find.
