Learn and Earn Under Fire Again

The Columbus Partnership, a group of local business leaders, is coming out against the Learn and Earn slot machine initiative. They say that bringing in slot machines and gambling would not help Central Ohio at all, and in fact would hurt Columbus since Cleveland is getting two slot machine parlors. They say that not only would it put them at a disadvantage, but the plan just doesn’t make sense for Ohioans to vote in.

They say that the jobs that the committee keeps saying it is going to bring in are just temporary jobs – that they would be mostly construction jobs. They also stress that those that are permanent would end up paying low wages that people really cannot survive on. The Learn and Earn Committee has been saying that they want to bring in 3,000 slot machines into each of seven racetracks and two slot machine gaming parlors into Cleveland – which would bring in money for scholarships, more jobs, and the slot machine revenue would help the state.

Opponents also say that amending the state constitution to allow something like gambling to come in is ridiculous and sets a bad precedent. The Learn and Earn camp pointed out all the ways that they would help the economy of the state, and pointed out that those counties that don’t have slot machines would still have income from the as the revenue would be divided up among those other counties. The organization blasted back at their opponents by saying that they didn’t have a good grasp on “the state of education in Ohio.”
