GOP Calls for Legislature to Reconvene

With the news that the Democratic officials did not approve the compacts signed by Governor Schwarzenegger before they left until January, the GOP leader is calling for them to reconvene to approve the addition of 20,000 slot machines in the state.

The governor’s compacts had been agreed upon by himself and the Indian tribes, but were sent to the Legislature too late for them to vote on them, which got many of the democrats in the legislature very unhappy. They felt the governor was pulling a fast one, and they refused to sign the compacts into agreement. Republican legislative leaders want the Democratic leaders to “immediately recall” both the Assembly and the Senate so that the compacts may be voted on and approved.

The governor’s office has declined to comment on the letter, but they have said that the governor would like the compacts signed as soon as possible. The Governor has the power to call back the lawmakers, and his office has said that it might be a possibility. They said that if he decides to pull them back, he will make an announcement preceding their return.

Anti-gambling groups find the idea preposterous, and think that the only reason the republicans are trying to get the legislature reconvened is so that they don’t lose money that would come into the state – thus adding to the possibility of them being re-elected. They feel they have sold out for money, and that the slot machines should not be approved.
