Maryland Delegates Discuss Slot Machines

At an open forum on Wednesday, candidates for Maryland’s House of Delegates answered questions that covered everything from pollution to the death penalty. Many however, had one question on their minds – where do the candidates stand on slot machines and gambling? There are two districts – 37A and 37B. District 37A has a Democrat incumbent, Rudolph Cane – who is being challenged by Charles Cephas Sr., who is also a Democrat. District 37B has two incumbents, both of whom are Republican, Adelaide “Addie” Eckardt and Jeannie Haddaway. They are opposed by Democrats James Adkins, Robert Cheek, Tim Quinn and Republican Redgie Lancaster. Robert Cheek was unable to attend the forum.

Adkins was opposed to slot machines, and felt that “Money and politicians is a very dangerous combination.” Cane agreed with the citizens that did not want gambling – he felt that by bringing in slot machines you are simply training a younger generation to gamble with their futures instead of working hard at them. Cephas was against them as well, and so was Eckhardt. She doesn’t want to see them in Dorchester, but would consider adding slot machines to racetracks if citizens wanted them.

Lancaster agreed with the others, and felt that gambling was not a business that the government should be in. He felt that they would “sap the life of the economy” and would end up being a negative instead of the positive that proponents try and make them seem. Quinn thought that the poor would end up with the worst of it. He felt that the money would come from places who use gambling to raise money for charity, so they would lose out on that – and the poor would be most likely to try and win money to help themselves out, thus putting themselves in deeper debt. Haddaway was the only one who seemed to think that there were positives in legalizing gambling. She thought that the revenue that could come from slot machines would add money to the budget, and if closely regulated it could do a lot of good for the district and the state.
