Mayor Jackson Endorses Slot Machines

Studies have shown that where there are slot machines, there are problem gamblers. Often called the “crack cocaine” of the gambling industry, slot machines seem to draw more with a serious gambling problem, than table games do. Not to say that there isn’t problems there as well, but the slot machines seem to be a kind of drug for those that are fighting the addiction.

In West Virginia this week, Mayor Frank Johnson endorsed having slot machines in downtown Cleveland. He is one of several city and county leaders who have chosen to back the November ballot issue that will legalize slot machines in Ohio. Opponents fear that this endorsement will add to the already growing population that thinks that it is a good idea to bring slot machines into the state. Their fear is that others will follow the mayor’s example.

They show studies that pinpoint gambling addiction increases when there are slot machines around, as well as the amount of crime that will increase in the areas surrounding the slot machine parlors. They show numerous statistics that show an increase in gambling addiction the closer you get to a slot machine parlor. The group Learn and Earn, the ones pushing for the slot machine legalization on the ballot, cite a 1999 survey as well as another survey by Harvard Medical School that shows that there is no correlation to the availability of slot machines and increased gambling addiction.
