Military Gambling AddictsThe military has gotten into the slot machine business and not to the better of our armed forces personnel. Many say that out of boredom they end up playing the slot machines and eventually develop a gambling problem that they say the military will not help them with. There are four branches of the armed forces, and between them they operate roughly 8,000 slot machines at the various bases and posts overseas. In 1999, military personnel and civilian employees paid $1.2 billion into the machines compare that with the $36 billion that goes into the casinos in Atlantic City, NJ and you see there is a problem developing. The military says that the majority of the money is returned to players as winnings, and that the remainder roughly $127 milion in 99 was kept as revenue and used towards activities for their personnel. Peter F. Isaacs, COO for the Army's Community and Family Support Center, said, it does not appear to be a systemic problem. The overwhelming majority of soldiers and their families appear to view this as just another recreation program. It's no different than saying, 'I'm going to spend $20 and go see a movie."' Opponents disagree, they say that there is a real problem, and if they want help they have to go off base and find a Gamblers Anonymous program. They say the military is taking from them and theirs and that it should be illegal.
