$1.7 Million Spent on Slots in OhioOhio Learn and Earn has been spending a lot of money trying to get slot machines in Ohio. The group just spent more than $1.7 million in their attempt to get enough signatures to get the slot machine initiative on the ballot in November. That works out to $2.75 for each of the 624,625 signatures that were submitted according to the Secretary of State’s office. Dave Zanotti, head of the committee that is fighting the slot machine initiative, said, “They bought a lot of bad signatures…There's no limit to what they're willing to spend." The group has been under fire for the means by which they were collecting those signatures; many felt that they were duped into signing the petitions, that the slot machine ballot item was misrepresented to the voters. Initially it was touted as a way to bring in more revenue and to assist those that might not be able to afford to go to college by supplying the top students in the state with scholarships. Its focus was later changed to reflect the gaming industry more; pointing out that the initiative was indeed bringing in slot machines and supporting gaming in Ohio. The slot machine initiative is actually being funded by the racetracks and by the developers of the proposed Cleveland slots parlors. There are no other sources of funding, and their supporters have pledged millions to get the slot machines in the state. By paying for the signatures, they have had no problems getting people to canvass the state in search of those who support it. slot machine, slot machine, slot machine, slot machine Back to September Index - Slot Machines Fan |
