Many states have looked at the amount of revenue, millions to billions of dollars in slot machine revenue that can be brought into the state’s coffers – and it is looking good. They have other ways of using gambling to bring in cash as well, such as lotteries, but slot machines really do have a way of bringing in cash with them. In 2004, ten states passed laws that enabled more forms of gambling to be allowed within their state.

Many are opposed to gambling, they think that morally it is corrupting their states, and that it just leads to gambling addictions and other social ills that aren’t worth the increase in money that the slot machines will bring. Others point out that many times property taxes are dropped, and that the amount of money going into their public schools has greatly increased, thus helping the state overall. Proponents say that as long as a portion of the proceeds from the slot machine revenue is used toward gambling programs, there should be no reason at all for anyone to oppose a slot machine windfall.
