How to Win Without Winning

It is quite fathomable to think that it is possible for someone to win an election in this country that didn’t really win. Starting with the election between Gore and Bush, many feel that the election was truly stolen from Gore by Bush due to a mass media campaign by the Bush group – which led everyone to believe that Gore was just a sore loser. Then, in 2004, there were more ugly rumors that Bush had stolen the election again, after all the hoopla over voting irregularities in voting machines across the country.

Well, not that there is proof of any of this, but there is a new book out by University of Pennsylvania visiting professor Steve Freeman. He contends that it is easier to rig a voting machine than it is to rig a slot machine. When you look at the comparison, he is right.

  • If you want to change any of the software on a slot machine, you have to have it approved by the gaming board, and they get a copy – if you want to change the software on a voting machine, only the company knows what it really is so you have to go with what they say they have.

  • To know whether or not the equipment is the way it should be, public scrutiny is invited, and is used to determine if things are the way they are supposed to be for the slot machines. No public information is given out at all from the for-profit companies who make the voting machines.

  • The regulators of slot machines will do spot checks to see if the machine is working correctly, and if it is found that it isn’t, it is immediately shut down until it is. For voting machines there is nothing to compare it to so you have no idea whether or not it is working right.

  • Slot machine manufacturers and operators go through extensive background checks in order to have anything to do with the slot machines. For voting machines, there is no way of knowing anything about any of the people making them or running them.

  • If there is a problem with the slot machine, the game regulators are called and they fully investigate any and all problems – they even open up the machines to see if they are working to code. If you have a problem with your voting machine you can call a number and register a complaint, but quite often nothing is done about it.
