Ohio Still Trying for GamblingThe slot machine initiative that is trying to get on the November ballot is still pushing strong. The group had a problem with the signatures they had collected in that many of them were deemed unusable and suspicious. The group then went out and got another group of signatures and is confident this time that they will end up with more than enough signatures. The group is trying to get slot machines placed in each of Ohio’s seven horse racetracks and two freestanding sites in downtown Cleveland, and needed another 8,700 valid signatures to get their slot machine measure passed. They ended up with thousands more than they actually needed. Some of the initial signatures were not even remotely valid having come from deceased voters, and others with similar signatures that had obviously just been copied from a voter registration list. The group ended up bringing in an additional 44,000 signatures – more than plenty to cover the invalid ones. The group is backed by racetrack owners and casino developers, and did not think they would have a problem raising enough signatures to get themselves on the ballot. Even their opponents thought they would have a fairly easy time at it as well. The signatures that were just turned in have to be validated as well, but they don’t expect to need any more.
