Protestors Stop Traffic

Four applicants for slots parlors, Sugar House Casino, Pinnacle Entertainment, Riverwalk Casino and Foxwoods Casino Philadelphia, want to open casinos along the Delaware River, and bring thousands of slot machines with them. Donald Trump has his eye on another site with some other investors, and theirs will be located in Northwest Philly. The problem isn’t the number of slot machines or how many casinos there will be, the issue is the amount of people that those slot machines and casinos will bring into Philadelphia.

Yesterday, one group had had enough. They got together, roughly 200 opponents of the slot machines and casinos, and stopped traffic in the area where the slots and casinos are going to be located. For 90 minutes they blocked off traffic and would not allow cars to pass through. They claim that the people of the city need to see what it will really be like once the slot machines and the casinos are in town. They say that the area that they blockaded will be where the Foxwoods Casino will sit, and everyday traffic will get increasingly worse as people try to get hone from work – and others try to get to the casino to play the slot machines.

The Riverfront Communities United group have gotten together to oppose the sites, and they say that the Foxwoods site will be the worse of all of them. They are a group made up of seven neighborhoods who don’t like what the casinos will do to the area. This was their second protest, the one they had in May brought roughly 500 protestors out. The Pennsylvania Gaming Board has yet to make a final ruling, and the protestors are hoping they can affect change. The residents want a park put in the area that the casino is looking to go, and say that the crime and drugs that will come with putting slot machines in this area will ruin their neighborhoods.
