San Manuels Wait for Word

It was announced this week that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had signed a compact with the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians to bring in 7,500 slot machines at its San Bernardino casino. However, the compact is sitting in the legislature awaiting approval.

The tribe would be adding an additional 5,500 slot machines to the 2,000 they already own and operate – and will bring millions of dollars of slot machine revenue to the state. The tribe is hoping that it will be approved today, for if it isn’t, they have to wait until December when the legislature reconvenes.

The tribe can not only add many more slot machine, but it will also be able to add another casino to their land. The problem isn’t the building and bringing in of the slot machines and the casino, it is the aftereffects of the move. Lawmakers are concerned with the impact this will have on the area, traffic, crime, etc. will all increase with the addition of that many slot machines. The tribe said that they are not in a rush to add the extra casino, they just want to make sure that they can at a later date – but they do admit that with that many slot machines coming in, you are definitely looking at more traffic.
