Scarlet’s Casino Closes Her Doors

Scarlet’s Casino has closed their doors and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection – a shock to many since the casino just opened their doors months ago. Officials cite a lack of parking as a main reason why people have not been frequenting the establishment, and feel that if they build a large parking garage they might get more business. The town is worried as they get much of their income from money the casinos pay them to operate the slot machines, and if those machines aren’t running, then there is no slot machine revenue for the town.

The town was already in a bit of a bind with where they were located, but with the completion of the Central City Parkway, many felt their troubles would soon be over. Not true, as many are using the parkway, but are gong straight through the town and on to Black Hawk. When the road was first built, the town saw a large increase in slot machine revenue, but now business has dropped off and many feel it is because of parking.

With Scarlet’s closed, the town now is relying heavily on Century Casinos which is a $40 million venture. The casino has table games, hotel rooms, and 625 slot machines – which means there will be some income for the town from them – but only if they can get people to stop driving through. Black Hawk brings in much more slot machine revenue than does Century City, and many think it has to do with the parking situation, as well as the fact that their casinos are not as glamorous as the ones in Black Hawk. Especially since Scarlet’s is not the first casino in Century City to close.
