Schwarzenegger Slides One In

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is a crafty one. For years he has been criticizing the tribal casinos saying that they are the problem with the state – that they and other special interest groups are the reason the state is in so much trouble. He said that he would not be adding to the state’s troubles by ratifying any more compacts.

Well, all that changed with the nearing of the end of the legislative session. Governor Schwarzenegger chose to try and sign several tribal compacts into the state, adding many more slot machines and revenue for the state. The groups would have brought in as many as 20,000 slot machines into California. But it doesn’t end there, for the democrats ended up not signing them.

The governor ended up showing support for the tribes – something that will benefit him on Election Day, and the tribes ended up fighting amongst themselves and with the democrats – a group they usually support come campaign time. They are the main funders of the democrats’ campaigns, and by pushing through the compacts, the governor has managed to hurt them dearly. The democrats said they did not have enough time to sign the compacts the way they were sent through.

I think it is safe to say that Governor Schwarzenegger stands a good chance now of keeping his job come election time, and many democrats are going to have some making up to do.
