Seekonk vs. Swansea

Six candidates are vying for Fourth Bristol District Rep, and they all met head to head to see where their differences lie. For many attending the meeting, they wanted to know where their candidates stood on bringing in slot machine and casino gambling as a way to bring in much needed revenue into the state.

From Seekonk, there was Steven S. Howitt and Brian Langevin on the Republican ballot, and John Whelan and Steve D’Amico, also of Seekonk, and Robert Marquis and Nicholas Bernier of Swansea try for the Democrat ballot. After the primaries, it will be down to two.

All of the candidates agreed that there was a need for more funding to the state, but how to get it was where they differed. Marquis thought that the amount of funding that was coming out of the lottery was not enough. He felt that there should be more going to the town’s needs instead of it going to the state and the state determining where it should go.

Whelan thought there should be a one percent meals tax, which people thought was a great idea as long as the money did not go to the state. Bernier was concerned that the same thing that happens with the lottery money would happen with the meal money. Howitt suggested bringing in slot machines to bring in much needed revenue.

Everyone else, except for Langevin, felt that bringing slot machines into the state was not the way to go. They felt that it would bring in more troubles than it was worth. Bernier said that the casinos would only bring crime to their state, and D’Amico thought that it would bring in lower paying jobs. Both thought that it would be a big mistake – one that would hurt them more than help. Howitt pointed out that since more than 60% of the cars that currently sit at Lincoln Park while their owners are inside playing the slot machines, were from Massachusetts – that instead of letting that income go over the state line they keep it in state. He said that there was no need to bring in casinos, just slot machines.
