Studies Show Slots Increase Addiction

Several studies have shown that there is an increase in gambling addiction that is relative to how close you live to a slot machine parlor. There is definitely a correlation between geography and slots, and study after study confirms it. A 2003 study by the Research Institute on Addiction at the State University of New York in Buffalo shows that people who live within ten miles of a casino will have twice the rate of gambling addiction as those who live further away.

The study did not focus on slot machine parlors in particular, but many feel that slot machines are actually worse than the table games – there is a higher risk of getting into trouble with the slot machines, and that it seems harder for an addict to walk away from them than somewhere else. Experts cite the increased risk of mental health problems, suicide, bankruptcy, and domestic abuse, the closer you get to the ability to gamble. They claim that slot machines and other types of gambling actually have a higher suicide rate than any of the other types of addiction.

The slot machines seem to make it worse, as there initially seems less to lose, a quarter here, a dollar there, and next thing you know, you are in for quite a bit of money. Slot machines also reinforce the idea that you can win, by giving frequent smaller payouts that keeps you putting your money in, in hopes that you will hit the big one. There is also the education level with the slot machine, you don’t have to know how to play cards, you don’t even really have to know how to play the slot machine – you just have to know how to put your money in. Experts say there is definitely a class issue when it comes to gambling addiction, you will see more higher education type gamblers addicted to cards, whereas you will see lower education type gamblers addicted to slot machines.

Anyone prone to gamble can already do so on the Internet or at out-of-state casinos, Charles Ruma, chairman of the Ohio Learn and Earn Committee, said in an interview.
