If You Want to Own Slots, You Gotta Speak EnglishThe push to nationalize English as the only accepted language in America was given an extra push by the Nevada Gaming Control Board. They have determined that if you want to operate a slot machine, you have to speak English, or you cannot run it. People can drink at your bar, etc., but they can’t play slots if you can’t speak the language. Rodolfo Martinez tried to bring in five slot machines into his bar, The Cantina El Jaripeo. The problem is that he only speaks a little English. The gaming board decided that there must be an English-speaking employee present at all times when the slot machines are in operation. If a customer has a question or concern, those needs must be met and that can only be done if there is communication between the bar and the patron. Deputy Attorney General Mike Wilson, when asked if this was constitutionally sound – since it is only a requirement and hence a burden on the non-English speaking slot machine owner, said that he had “full and absolute power and authority” under state law.
