Looks Like Slots Are a No-GoThe racetrack owners in Massachusetts have been hoping that slot machines would be approved to come into their businesses – something that will truly help keep the industry alive. Slow sales and other problems have put the racetracks in the danger zone, and without the slot machines they may have to seriously consider closing some doors. State House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi announced that it looked like the House was not going to approve the measure, much to the racetracks dismay. He said that it was more important at this time for the state to be concentrating on the 500,000 uninsured residents than it was to worry about slot machines at racetracks. He said that the House probably wouldn’t even look at the initiative this term. Senate President Robert Travaglini said that he was disappointed by the decision, but resigned to it. His district truly needs it as the Wonderland Greyhound Park in Revere is there, and they need the money that the slot machines would bring in badly. Between the Connecticut casinos and slot machines in both Maine and Rhode Island, the racetracks say they cannot compete unless they are awarded slot machines as well.
