Supercasino Doesn’t Come Without Trouble

The Casino Advisory Panel has a hard time deciding which town is going to get the often touted supercasino – with opponents and proponents alike at every turn telling them which way they should go. Last week’s panel to decide if Glasgow should be the one, was met with much opposition, as Ken Rolwegan spelled out why they shouldn’t bring it to Glasgow. "The employment benefits are minimal," he explained. "The staff gets smart uniforms, but bad wages. It will cause more social problems because the staff is working unsocial hours. Where will profits go? To line the pockets of people outside our country."

The problem is that he is right in a way. Since the UK had made the announcement of the supercasino, gaming operators have been taken over right, left and center. Stanley Leisure, which operated Britain’s largest gaming palace, has already fallen under the knife and has merged with another company from outside the UK. They are not the only ones. Many of them are having the same problems.

What if they do open this supercasino? The whole reason for doing it is to bring money into Britain’s coffers, but if all the companies are owed by overseas companies, who will get the profits? Some will stay in the country, but most of it will end up going overseas. The money that does stay will go to the treasury in London, and the region will not see a dime. Of course, this doesn’t stop the towns from vying for it, for they think that if nothing else, the region will see an increase in revenue from people coming in to play the slot machines.

Opponents still think that the country will end up with US gaming groups grabbing as much land and money as they can in the country, and analysts say this is just the beginning. “The Americans came in and took our hotels, they took Marriott from Whitbread and the Hilton hotels from the Hilton group, and now they are going to take our casinos - the deregulation is no coincidence."
