Governor Taft Starts Anti-Gambling Tour

Governor Taft and First Lady Hope Taft have decided to take the show on the road. They are vehemently opposed to casinos, and have started an anti-casino road tour which will be educating others about the dangers of gambling and slot machines. The tour will stop at addiction treatment centers in Columbus, Cleveland, and Dayton.

While on tour, they have been spotted with gambling addicts, counselors and Senators. In Cleveland, they were joined by U.S. Senator George Voinovich to warn listeners about the dangers of slot machines, and dangers of bringing in 3,500 slot machines into each of seven racetracks and two downtown Cleveland sites. "We're going to have a very one-sided campaign," Governor Taft said. "On the other side there's a lot of money, but there's a lot of profits that are going to go to the racetrack owners and the casino owners - big time."

Proponents of the slot machine initiative think that it is ironic that the governor should now be out telling people not to gamble, when it was he who brought in the largest increase in lottery sales in state history. They claim he is the “biggest bookie in the state” because of his push to have Ohio join the MegaMillions multistate lottery. They claim that the slot machines would not be needed if he hadn’t pushed the state to its limit with education increases. They claim that it is because of his antics that the slot machines are needed to bring in money for scholarships for students. They claim that since he and the Senator have been in office that college tuition has gone up 343 percent.
