Does Patrick Want Gambling?

It is tough to be governor of any state, especially with so many of them looking at long and painful budget sessions, but some are having a harder time than usual this year. Take Governor Deval Patrick, trying to decide if the way to fix a broken budget is to add slot machines to the mix, or if they need to keep looking for another fix.

Patrick has been going back and forth on the slot machine issue, calling advisors and meetings to try and get a handle on what they should do about legalizing them. He has been playing it pretty cool, and most do not have any idea as to which way he has been leaning. He was to make his decision by Labor Day, but then extended his vacation and had more meetings regarding the issue.

With the Wampanoag tribe gearing up for a fight for a casino now that they have gotten the go ahead from Middleboro, many say that Patrick might as well allow slot machines so that the state can benefit from them as well. Others say that Patrick should wait until after signing a deal with the tribe to get a portion of their slot machine revenue, and thus ensuring more income for the state, before they legalize them and give the tribe a free ride.

However, whatever Patrick chooses to do about the slot machines, he has to come up with a revenue source. He made a lot of promises to people on the campaign trail, and failed to deliver in his first budget as there just wasn’t money for it. Now he has to come up with a way to fund those commitments without raising taxes – which leaves the legalization of slot machines.
