Suits Against Seminoles Could Drag OnThe Seminole Tribe of Florida and Governor Charlie Crist, also of Florida, are back at the table again to discuss a compact that would give the Seminoles slot machines and possibly table games as well. The tribe has been trying for some years to expand their gambling rights, and previous governor Jeb Bush would not sign an agreement with them. When Broward County legalized slot machines, it gave the tribe the legal right to offer them as well, so now in order to get some of that slot machine revenue, Governor Crist has to offer a little more incentive to the tribe so that they won’t just take the money and run. He thinks that by adding table games to the mix that they might just have a great compact, one in which everyone benefits. However, court battles seem to be imminent as rumblings have already begun over the addition of table games to the tribe’s roster. If lawsuits are filed against the tribe and the state, it could mean years before the tribe is actually able to take advantage of the slot machines and/or table games. The
tribe however is not concerned with what might happen as they
say that if the governor and they come to an agreement, there
really should be nothing to fight about. They say that they have
heard these same rumblings before and nothing came of it, so
they are pretty sure that it isn’t something that they have to
worry about.
