Church Leader Wants Regulations on Slot Machines

Church leaders in Melbourne, Australia are horrified by the number of slot machines that have come into their city and their country. They say that the slot machines are taking over their land and that people are being destroyed by them – and they want their government to do something about it.

They are asking their leaders to stop the influx of illegal gambling and stop computer gambling. They say that it is causing “harm and dysfunction” amongst the poor in their country. They want slot machines stopped.

The issue is that slot machines have proliferated in the lower income communities; the people who can least afford to play. They testified before the senate on September 11^th saying that the effect of these slot machines, these video poker machines, was “corrosive” on society.

The church wants strict regulations adopted on the machines as to how they are used and distributed throughout the community. The gaming industry had said that the slot machines were “healthy family recreation,” however; the church says that this is hard to believe when their recreation is causing them to lose their homes.
