Stop Illegal GamblingFlorida’s Attorney General, Bill McCollumn, is on a quest to stop illegal gambling. He says that the Seminole Tribe is operating illegal slot machines and gambling and he wants it stopped. McCollumn sent a letter to the Chairman of the National Indian Gaming Commission asking them to tell the tribe to immediately stop their illegal gambling. He said that the “state of Florida is in the untenable position of having a tribal gaming operation, which everyone acknowledges is unauthorized, ongoing without the jurisdiction to stop the illegal activities.” McCollumn says that even though he requested they stop, they have not. He says that the State Supreme Court has even determined that the slot machine compact was not valid, but they still continue to operate. He claims that it is frustrating for him to stand by and watch illegal slot machine gambling going on. He has had an issue with the compact that Governor Crist had signed with the tribe – and had been fighting it – even though it was probably the best thing for the state. Under the slot machine compact the tribe gave a portion of the proceeds to the state. The state was in danger of losing the revenue all together, which is why the signing was so important.
