Sometimes Good, Sometimes Not

Summer is a strange time for the slot machine industry in New Jersey. Years ago you could count on summer months being some of the highest months of the year for the state. However, this is no longer the case. Instead, some casinos will see an increase in their slot machine revenues while others will see a decrease. This, more often than not, has been the way of the land for the past few years.

However, the New Jersey Casino Control Commission will be releasing the new slot machine revenue figures for the summer, and many are eagerly anticipating the announcement. Both June and July of this past summer had double digit percentage revenue decreases, which do not hold out much hope for August. The state is already bracing itself to have had one of the lowest summers in their recent history.

They have several things working against them. One of which is the number of slot machines that have invaded nearby states. Not only that, but Pittsburgh has built a $780 million casino, which has taken a block of their funds. The slot machines in the Pennsylvania casinos have been performing pretty well, which is obviously not the case for New Jersey.

This is not to say the Pennsylvania is not without their problems as well. Five of their slot machine casinos that opened last year have already seen a decrease in their profits. Some say that the Northeast is becoming saturated with the number of slot machines, and therefore they cannot all be supported. As more and more casinos open, and more slot machines become available to residents, it is likely that we will see much more of this kind of decrease in revenues across the region.
