It is a well
known fact that when it comes to slot machines there are some pretty
crazy notions out there as to what it takes to win the game. Some of
them are superstitions that people have passed down as facts over the
years and others just don’t make a lick of sense when you really think
about them. The fact of the matter is that slot machines are what they
are – games of chance and if you are lucky enough to win at one, good
for you – because it is nothing but luck that will get you that win.
Some people think
it has something to do with the temperature of the coin that you put in
the slot. They argue amongst each other that it is the hot coin that
tricks the slot machine into paying out, while others insist it is the
cold ones. Either way, they are both wrong.
Some people think
that if you stand instead of sitting you will take home more of a win.
They say that the slot machine hits out when you stand because it
increases their odds. Some think that if they are too relaxed at the
slot machine that it will cause them to lose – I kid you not!
Others think that
the casino is watching your every move and if you are winning a lot they
will cause the slot machine to stop paying out. If you are losing, they
will cause you to win so that you stay at the slot machine. However, the
casinos do not have the power to change the slot machine – it would be
illegal for them to do so. This is why we have regulators who check the
slot machines for tampering. This goes hand in hand with the idea that
if an operator comes along to interrupt their play to inspect the slot
machine that they are setting it to lose – also not true, and also
against the law.
And then there
are those that say that the slot machines that are newer and the casinos
that are newer pay out better than those that are older. They believe
that if they let the slot machines pay out more than they will bring in
more clients, who will then stay to play more. Then the casino does the
ol’ switcheroo and leaves them with nothing by increasing the amount
that they get to keep. Not true, although some casinos do put slot
machines that are “looser” closer to the doors so as to reel people in,
but they don’t change their payout once you start playing them.
Then there is the
idea that a slot machine has not hit in a while so it “owes” you to in.
Not true – there is a random number generator inside so whether or not
you win this time, the first time, the last time, your chances of
winning are the same each and every time. You could play for three hours
and the next person walks up and wins. This doesn’t mean they got your
win, they just got lucky.
